I truly believe that every kid living in America, no matter what their background or story may be, should be guaranteed a strong and well-rounded education. No government, institution, nor administration should get in the way of this goal.
I’ve always loved school. For me one of the biggest motivating factors for attending school is being able to gain a strong education. Being educated — properly educated as well as thoroughly educated — I believe is the first step in bettering one’s life. My family immigrated here from the small African country of Rwanda with not much money but a passion to succeed and learn. Both my mother and father worked in a school back in Rwanda, their love for learning was transferred to my brother and I as we began our public schooling career here in America.
From a very young age I always loved learning new things. I also had a slightly competitive edge to me, so I really liked to challenge and push myself to always be the best that I possibly could be in my classes. Every time that I would get a passing grade in a subject or a high score on a test, I would think about all the possibilities my future held for me. It’s this feeling of hope that I get from successfully learning new material in school that has helped liberate me in this country.

I vividly remember wanting to be so many things when I was younger; a writer one day and a comedian the next. To me the possibilities were endless because of my education. Currently, I’m still trying to figure out what I want to do with my life, but I still feel as though my possibilities are infinite. This is what a strong education can do for a person — reveal to one’s self that the world is theirs for the taking. It’s also worth noting that a powerful education doesn’t only teach youth things such as the quadratic formula and how to balance chemical equations, but it also teaches kids how to learn and know what questions to ask in life.
A strong education can teach people how to go about the world combating ignorance and how to continue growing in their character; to take away someone’s chance at gaining a good education is to leave them without essential life lessons and to rid them of the opportunity to reach their highest potential.
