Check. It. Out! SFER NC is leading the coverage about credit recovery and higher learning access in a featured article in the Charlotte Observer (Charlotte's largest newspaper, reported by their leading education reporter).
Watch SFER NC students give fiery testimony, calling out the "scam" credit recovery program in CMS schools which has had negative consequences for Black and Brown students when they apply for college.
SFER NC's Higher Learning Campaign also gets a shout out from NC Director Sharika here:
“I’m tired of watching students who look like me — and half of this board — sink because of this district’s low expectations,” said SFER’s North Carolina director, Sharika Comfort. Like most of the SFER speakers, she is African American. “Our higher learning campaign is not focused on holding students back when they need to be propelled forward,” said Gia Claybrooks, senior lead organizer for the group. “Our campaign is focused on caring about them so much that we can’t fathom them staying in poverty.”
SFER NC's Kennedy Cook doesn't hold back:
“Credit recovery does not prepare students for mastery of content, much less for life,” said Kennedy Cook, a sophomore at Charlotte’s Johnson C. Smith University and a member of Students For Education Reform, a New York-based nonprofit advocacy group with a North Carolina branch. Cook called credit recovery “a scam” that “passes students through a failing system.”
